How did you find the Club? Did you like it?
It was a great privilege to stay at the Yacht Club Argentino. The staff was very helpful and friendly all of the time and the club accommodation and restaurant facilities are world class. It must be great to member of YCA. When compared to many other yacht clubs the YCA is a very experienced sail racing club with excellent social facilities as well. Many clubs around the world are mainly social clubs with very little regatta management experience.
Did you like Buenos Aires? Did you have the chance to make some sightseeing here? What did you like the most?
I liked Buenos Aires. I did a lot of walking and enjoyed the local sights. Also the local judges John Mac Call, Jose Maria Sanchez-Pagano, Gonzalo Heredia and Flavio Naveira showed us around and very kindly hosted us to BBQ's at their homes. The sightseeing highlight was a Tango show at the Piazzola Tango.
What about your experience here as judge? Did you enjoy it?
It was very easy to be a judge here at the YCA. The YCA judges are very experienced and the all of the jury support services are well established because the YCA runs a lot of championships. The jury boats were excellent and it is always great to have all of the facilities so close together. You can walk from the jury room to the jury boats in less than one minute. The PRO Kiko Kundig did an excellent job in running the two Maclaren laser regattas. He had to make some very tough decisions when the wind was very light and was making racing difficult.
Can you compare this championship to others in the world?
The YCA and Buenos Aires is a great place for a world championship. The on-shore championship facilities are excellent and there is lots of local accommodation and sightseeing nearby. The race course area is very close to the club so it is very quick to get to and from the racing area. The two Maclaren laser championships have been very well run. I hope that the laser class has more world championships here. The YCA is very good at running sailing championships.
¿Te gustó el Club?
Fue un gran privilegio quedarme en el Yacht Club Argentino. El staff fue muy servicial y amigable todo el tiempo y las instalaciones del Club y del restaurant son de primera clase. Debe ser muy bueno ser socio del YCA. Cuando se lo compara con otros clubes náuticos, el YCA tiene mucha experiencia en regatas, así como también excelentes instalaciones sociales. Muchos clubes del mundo son lugares sociales, pero tienen poca experiencia en organización de regatas.
¿Tuviste la oportunidad de recorrer Buenos Aires? ¿Te gustó?
Me gustó Buenos Aires. Hice muchas caminatas y me gustaron los lugares de interés locales. Además, los jueces locales John Mac Call, José María Sánchez Pagano, Gonzalo Heredia y Flavio Naveira nos llevaron a recorrer y nos invitaron asados en sus casas. Lo más destacado fue el show de tango en Piazzola Tango.
¿Cómo fue tu experiencia como juez? ¿La disfrutaste?
Fue muy fácil ser juez en el YCA. Los jueces del YCA tienen mucha experiencia y todo el apoyo para el jurado está bien armado, ya que el YCA organiza muchos campeonatos. Los botes para el jurado son excelentes y siempre es un placer tener todos los medios tan cerca. Se puede caminar desde la sala del jurado hasta los botes en menos de un minuto. El Oficial de Regata Kiko Kundig hizo un trabajo excelente largando las regatas del MacLaren. Tuvo que tomar decisiones difíciles cuando el viento era muy leve y largar las regatas se hacía complicado.
¿Podrías comparar este campeonato con otros en el mundo?
El YCA y Buenos Aires son muy buenos lugares para hacer un campeonato mundial. Las facilidades en tierra son excelentes y hay muchas instalaciones locales y lugares de interés cerca. Los recorridos quedan cerca del Club, así que se hace rápido llegar y volver de la cancha de regatas. Los dos campeonatos MacLaren fueron bien realizados. Espero que la clase laser haga más campeonatos aquí. El YCA es muy bueno organizando campeonatos.

How did you find the Club? Did you like it?
As on other occasions I came to the Club, it is always a pleasure to be here. One point that outstands is the cordiality and kindness of the members, what we call in portuguese "simpatia". I must haste to add that the staff is also absolutely professional and helpful.
What is your favorite thing about our city?
Well, I really enjoy going out for a good dinner matched with one of the excellent argentine wines. I try to go to 2 or 3 different restaurants when I am here, but one old favorite remains: the Oviedo.
What about your experience here as judge? Did you enjoy it? Why?
As I said, it is good to work with a very professional staff and the club always arranges to have very competent judges. So, judging here is fully supported and consequently a lot more relaxed than at other places that don´t have the same resources.
Can you compare this championship to others in the world?
The all around organization delivers a good service for the sailors that you don´t find everywhere. I could say that these championships are at par or better than other world championships I been to recently.

I hope to come back soon again!
¿Qué te pareció el Club? ¿Te gustó?
Como en otras ocasiones en las que vine al Club, siempre es un placer estar aquí. Algo destacable es la cordialidad y amabilidad de los miembros, lo que en portugués llamamos “simpatía”. Tengo que añadir también que el staff es absolutamente profesional y servicial.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de esta ciudad?
Bueno, en verdad me gusta salir a disfrutar de una buena cena acompañada de uno de los excelentes vinos argentinos. Trato de ir a 2 o 3 restaurantes diferentes cuando estoy aquí, pero insisto con uno de de mis viejos favoritos: el Oviedo.
¿Cómo fue tu experiencia como juez? ¿La disfrutaste?
Como dije antes, es bueno trabajar con un staff realmente profesional y el Club siempre se organiza para tener jueces muy competentes. Así que siendo juez uno se siente apoyado y consecuentemente más relajado que en otros lugares donde no hay los mismos recursos.
¿Cómo comparás este campeonato respecto de otros en el mundo?
La organización en general provee un buen servicio para los regatistas que no se encuentra en cualquier parte. Puedo decir que estos campeonatos están a la par o son mejores que otros a los que he asistido recientemente.

How was the measurement process? What were the principal obstacles while measuring?
The measurement process went smoothly in both events, no special issues. We had many and very dedicated people helping, which made it easier. In the 4.7s I was surprised by the amount of sail numbers and national letters supplied and even placed on the sails by Laser dealers and Laser manufacturers which were out of measurement or misplaced. Several irregularities found that had to do with the way the Laser is rigged, were due to lack of knowledge of the rules and were promptly solved. Knowing how difficult and expensive it is to get Laser equipment and spares, I was surprised that we had very few cases of illegal equipment, which was not allowed and had to be replaced.
Did you like the Club?
I enjoyed, or better, I am enjoying Yacht Club Argentino. The premises are very good and nice, people are very friendly and helpful, always trying to give visitors a good time and helping them whenever they may need.
I'm having my meals at the club and the food is very good too.
What about Buenos Aires? Is this your first time here? Did you like it?
It is my second time in Buenos Aires, but the other time I did not have the chance to visit the city. Other than the club hosting the event and the hotel, the only place I had the chance to visit was Yacht Club Argentino in San Fernando. The members of the Jury were kindly invited to have lunch at those magnificent facilities. This time I had the chance to visit Buenos Aires, a great city with many beautiful places and things to see.
Can you give us your opinion about the championships?
Both events were very well organized, and the Race Committee did and is doing a very good job. In the 4.7s we were very lucky with the weather and all scheduled races were completed and were very good. In the Standard Under 21, in spite of the great effort by the organizers, the weather is not helping and we are five races behind schedule, which means that not all races will be run. Hope that the last two days will provide us excellent races. The number of competitors is also a bit disappointing, the organizers deserved more.
¿Cómo fue el proceso de medición? ¿Cuáles fueron los principales problemas encontrados?
El proceso de medición fue parejo en ambos eventos, sin mayores inconvenientes. Tuvimos mucha gente ayudando -y muy dedicada-, lo que lo hizo más fácil. En el Mundial de 4.7 me sorprendió la cantidad de números de vela y letras suministradas y hasta colocadas en las velas por los comerciantes y fabricantes de Laser, que quedaban fuera de medición o fuera de lugar. Varias irregularidades encontradas relacionadas con la forma en que el Laser es preparado se debían a la falta de conocimiento de las reglas y fueron rápidamente resultas. Sabiendo lo difícil y costoso que es conseguir equipamiento y repuestos de Laser, me sorprendió haber encontrado muy pocos casos de equipamiento ilegal, que no estaba permitido y tenía que ser reemplazado.
¿Te gusto el Club?
Lo disfruté, o mejor dicho, estoy disfrutando el Yacht Club Argentino. Los edificios son buenos y muy lindos, la gente es amigable y servicial, siempre tratando de que los visitantes pasen un buen tiempo y ayudándolos cuando lo necesitan.
Además, estoy comiendo en Club y la comida también es muy buena.
¿Y Buenos Aires te gustó? ¿Es tu primera vez aquí?
Esta es mi segunda visita a Buenos Aires, pero la vez pasada no tuve tiempo de visitar la ciudad. Además del Club en el que se realizaba el evento y el hotel, el único lugar que pude visitar fue la sede del YCA en San Fernando. Los miembros del jurado fueron invitados a almorzar en esas instalaciones increíbles. Esta vez tuve la oportunidad de recorrer Buenos Aires, una gran ciudad con lugares hermosos y muchas cosas para ver.
¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre estos campeonatos?
Los dos eventos estuvieron bien organizados y la Comisión de Regata hizo y está haciendo un muy buen trabajo. En el Mundial de 4.7 tuvimos mucha suerte con el tiempo, todas las regatas programadas pudieron completarse y salieron muy bien. Ahora en el de Standard under 21, a pesar del gran esfuerzo realizado por los organizadores, el tiempo no está ayudando y hay cinco regatas menos de lo establecido, lo que significa que no se correrán todas las regatas. Espero que estos últimos dos días nos provean regatas excelentes. El número de competidores también es un poco decepcionante, los organizadores merecían más.

“This is my second time in Buenos Aires. I was here some years ago and gave a match racing clinic. And because I really liked it here, I was very pleased to be invited back. The club clearly has a long tradition, and the members and volunteers I have met are all very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very nice!!
It is also clear that there is a lot of experience here, both with the management on the water and ashore - and that makes it easy to be a jury member!
These days, Buenos Aires does not live up to its name - as we have very light winds, but the racing so far has been fair and that is the most important.
I feel very welcome as a judge coming to Yacht Club Argentino!!”
“Esta es mi segunda visita a Buenos Aires. Estuve aquí algunos años atrás dando una clínica de match race. Y realmente me gustó, así que estuve encantada de ser invitada de nuevo. El club claramente tiene una larga tradición, y los miembros y voluntarios que encontré son todos muy amigables y solidarios. ¡La atmósfera es muy buena!
Además, es claro que aquí hay mucha experiencia, tanto en el desempeño en el agua como en tierra (y eso hace que sea mucho más fácil formar parte del Jurado).
Estos días Buenos Aires no hace mucho honor a su nombre, ya que hay vientos demasiado leves, pero las regatas hasta ahora han sido justas y eso es lo más importante.

“We are trying to make this championship, there was almost no wind due to the bad conditions. The previous World Championship (Laser 4.7 Youth) was really good because the weather accompanied us, there were good races and variety of winds, both of speed and sector...
Until now the fleet is relaxed, waiting on land. Regarding the level, I couldn’t see much in only one race. In general it seemed that they are good, but we didn’t have conditions to prove it.
For tomorrow the weather forecast is also bad, the same as today. We hope it isn’t right!”
“Estamos tratando de sacar este campeonato adelante, porque hasta ahora casi no hubo campeonato debido a las malas condiciones meteorológicas. El anterior (Laser 4.7 Youth) estuvo muy bien porque nos acompañó la meteorología, hubo buenas regatas y variedad de vientos, tanto de intensidad como de sector…
Por ahora la flota está relajada, esperando en tierra. En cuanto al nivel, no pude ver demasiado en una sola regata. En general parecía que bien, nunca tuvimos condiciones para probarlo tampoco.

“It was sad today, I wanted to sail; doing nothing makes me more tired than sailing… I like the Club, I knew it before because I sailed the last Central South American Laser Championship. And in 2005 I came to Buenos Aires to compete in the South American Optimist championship in San Isidro.
Until now I couldn’t make much sightseeing in Buenos Aires, but I want to do that. I heard the theatre shows are really good!
Tomorrow I hope to sail and go up because I begun very badly. Also I hope we have a discard... I wish there is low wind, but enough to let us sail.”
