THE YACHT CLUB ARGENTINO WILL GIVE THE BEST OF ITSELF, AND WILL PUT ALL ITS EFFORT, IN ORDER TO MAKE AN EXCELLENT CHAMPIONSHIP AND ALSO, TO MAKE ALL OF YOU, FEEL GOOD.
THE LASER CLASS WAS BORN FROM A CONVERSATION THAT TOOK PLACE IN 1969, BETWEEN BRUCE KIRBY AND IAN BRUCE WHILE TALKING ABOUT DESIGNING A SAILING BOAT THAT COULD BE TRANSPORTED ON THE ROOF OF THE CAR, UNLIKE OTHER CLASSES, WHICH REQUIRE A TRAILER. THE BOAT, FOR A SINGLE CREW, LIGHTWEIGHT, SIMPLE AND COMPETITIVE, WAS PRESENTED TO THE PUBLIC IN NEW YORK BOAT SHOW IN 1971. THE INTERNATIONAL YACHT RACING UNION (NOW ISAF) RECOGNIZED THE CLASS AS AN INTERNATIONAL CLASS IN 1974.
I WANT TO ESPECIALLY THANK THE ARGENTINE LASER CLASS, THE ARGENTINE YACHTING FEDERATION, THE YACHTING COMMITTEE OF OUR CLUB, THE CHAIRMAN, JUDGES, RACE OFFICERS, MEASUREMENT TEAM, THE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB AND ALL THE VOLUNTEERS, FOR YOUR WORK IN ORDER TO MAKE THESE CHAMPIONSHIP COMES TRUE.

Words from Carlos Palombo. ILCA Central & South American Chair.
"Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to the 2012 Laser World Championship.
Let me share with you the joy and satisfaction of living this moment, a moment that began as a dream that has now come true.
Several years ago, when Marcel Baqué encouraged me to submit to the ILCA a Letter of Intent to host the Laser World Championship in Argentina, I knew it would be an ambitious goal to achieve. But thanks to his sheer persistence and Freya Mors’ hard work, together with the unconditional support of the authorities of the Yacht Club Argentino, as well as that of the sponsors Galicia Eminent and McLaren, we are finally here today to set sails.
No less remarkable have been the efforts of our President, Mr. Heini Wellmann, who, together with the rest of members of the World Council, has put his shoulder to the wheel for this championship to be realised. He had to overcome many obstacles, which, believe me, have been extremely complex. Although he is not present here, I would like to express my deep sense of gratitude to him for his outstanding contribution.
Over recent years our laser class has grown exponentially, which has made it more complex to manage and organise. Throughout the year many international championships are organized if we take into account the different categories and rigs that coexist in the class.
While our office is staffed to perform the relevant tasks, the members of the World Council decide upon the strategy and the direction of the class, always trying to meet the objectives and desires of the sailors. To this end, we devote our time voluntarily and highly motivated by our shared passion for this little boat called Laser.
Many of you are aware of the difficult situation we are facing as a class because of the provision of boats and spare parts. The problem is complex and we are striving to solve it. For this reason, today more than ever before, as a class we need to stand united and determined to defend the fundamental "the one design class” principle,
which led the laser class to be the most successful and largest in the world.
To the young competitors I would say: You are the future of the class. I had my first laser when I was 17, the age you are now. At that time, my first boat was number 100638, and today we are more than 200,000. At my age of 50 I am still competing and racing in championships, and hope that I can keep on doing it until the very last day of my life—because the laser is not only a boat, but a lifestyle.
Lastly, I wish all competitors good luck. If you win, please do not be proud but continue to pursue the finest knowledge and quality in laser. For those who lose, please do not give up, do continue to improve and prove your spirit in laser.
Enjoy each race to the full, take part in this event showing your sportsmanship and take care for this class that we are privileged to belong to.
Good winds and hiking hard!"
1 April 2012

Charter boats operation
Greetings from the Laser 4.7 World Championships at the YCA in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The charter operation is running smoothly and on schedule and being overseen by Rudy Ratsep, from the USA, and Flor Abinzano, from the YCA, with great assistance from the entire staff and membership of the YCA. Much has been accomplished since the late evening arrival of four shipping containers; with four stacks of five Lasers and their trolleys in each; on 21 March, including fighting off the “mosquitos” during unloading. 22 March saw the unstacking of the boats and trolleys by the YCA maintenance staff under the anxious eyes of Rudy and Flor.
The remainder of 22 March and all of 23 March was spent un-wrapping the boats, install cleats and fittings, applying sponsor logos, assembling rudders and loading the combo bags. 24 March saw the start of pre-charter period and the release of boats to the sailors who presented themselves.
The boats are inspected carefully by the competitors and charter staff prior to release and any defects either corrected or noted on the charter diagram. All competitors are reminded that if they experience any problems with their boats after release to present it back to Rudy and Flor for correction or replacement. As of the end of the day on 25 March 40 of the 80 available charter boats were ready for the championship.
Rudy has been a member of ILCA since 1975 and is an ISAF Laser Measurer who has measured and competed (Master) at numerous World Championships. Flor is an engineering student who has studied overseas and learned to sail at the YCA.
